Baker McKenzie to Help Lead Mingtiandi Co-Living Forum in Hong Kong on Monday Mingtiandi Events

With Asia’s professionals becoming increasingly mobile, investors in the region are seeing the appeal of rental housing, including multi-family projects and their hipster cousin – co-living – as an asset class.

To spotlight opportunities for investors in the rental residential sector, on Monday, 25 November, Mingtiandi is holding its first ever event on co-living in Hong Kong, featuring a discussion among top investors, operators and advisors in this fast-growing real estate niche.

Helping to lead the discussion at the Mingtiandi Hong Kong Co-Living Seminar is Baker McKenzie partner Jason Ng, who led the international law firm’s team in advising Weave Co-Living on the initial $181 million investment from Warburg Pincus in 2018, which the US private equity giant had the option to upsize to $431.5 million.

Showing How Operators and Fund Managers Can Work Together

At the event, which opens with a spotlight interview with Weave CEO Sachin Doshi and Warburg Pincus, Jason will be taking part in a panel discussion alongside Weave vice president Shashank Narayan, Atlas Residential managing director Patrick Kelly, and Colliers International’s head of valuation and advisory for Asia Pacific, David Faulkner.

Having helped Weave to establish a platform which recently added its fourth property in Hong Kong, and which has plans to build a portfolio of 1,000 bedrooms across the region by 2023, Jason, who serves as co-Chair of Baker McKenzie’s Global Funds Group, will be sharing his insights with attendees on how developers, operators and investors can work together to create scalable partnerships to leverage opportunities in this fast-growing asset class.

Baker McKenzie, which just four months ago was named the top legal brand in Asia Pacific by Acritas for the third consecutive year, has now built a team of more than 330 lawyers in its Global Real Estate practice. The international law firm has assisted institutional and private equity investors, multinationals, banks, hotels and REITS with all of their global real estate needs, from buying, selling, mergers and acquisitions, fund formation and structuring, and leasing property to financing, constructing major projects, and advice on specialised sectors such as co-living and data centre development and management.

Jason, who has more than 20 years of experience advising clients on the structuring and formation of fund products including having advised general partners and limited partners on formation of and investment into numerous private real estate funds, will be discussing with his fellow panelists about what makes co-living investments distinct from other asset classes, and how investors may benefit from the opportunity to build a portfolio of properties in this new approach to residential in Hong Kong and other centres around the region.

Monday Event Expected to Sell Out

A sell-out crowd of 100 people are expected at the event, which will be held at the Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel in Wanchai, with representatives of fund managers including AEW, Heitman, Kailong REI, Oaktree Capital and Warburg Pincus having already confirmed their attendance.

Also expected at the gather are executives from both local and international developers including Frasers Property, Henderson Land Development, Hines, Poly Global and Sun Hung Kai Properties.
