
Malcolm MacLean, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Star Asia Group
Malcolm F. MacLean IV is the Founder, Managing Partner and Director of Star Asia Group, with offices in Tokyo and the U.S. Mr. MacLean is responsible for the day-to-day investment activities at the Firm as co-Chair of the Investment Committee. Since inception, Star Asia Group has acquired or developed over JPY1.4 trillion of real estate and real estate related assets.
Star Asia Group is also the sponsor of Star Asia Investment Corporation (TSE: 3468), a public traded, diversified JREIT with approximately JPY280 billion in assets under management. In addition, Star Asia Group is the sponsor and majority shareholder of Polaris Holdings Ltd (TSE:3010), an owner and operator of hotel properties throughout Japan and the Philippines. Mr. MacLean is a Member of the Board of Directors of Polaris Holdings.
Mr. MacLean is also the co-Founder of Taurus Capital Partners LLC, which makes opportunistic investments in public and private companies, partnerships and other structured vehicles globally. Previously, Mr. MacLean was the President, Portfolio Manager and Head Trader for Mercury Global Real Estate Advisors LLC, a global real estate investment firm with offices in Greenwich, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong.
Mr. MacLean is also the non-Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors of A SPAC II Acquisition Corp. (NASDQ: ASCB) as well as a Member of the Board of Directors of several private companies in which he is invested.
Mr. MacLean has over 30 years of experience in the global investment business with a focus on the acquisition of private and public real estate debt and equity securities and direct property throughout Japan and non-Japan Asia, the United States and Europe, having structured and consummated over $20 billion of investments over his career. In addition, Mr. MacLean has extensive experience as lead manager in originating, structuring and executing equity, debt and M&A transactions for public and private real estate companies globally having advised in and completed transactions totaling in excess of $15 billion while an investment banker for eight years (1992 1999). Mr. MacLean was a Senior Vice President of PaineWebber’s and Kidder Peabody & Co’s (now UBS) Real Estate Investment Banking Groups in New York.
Mr. MacLean studied International Economics at the University of Cambridge in England and graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut with a B.A. in Economics and Law.
Star Asia is an independent real estate investment group managing funds from investors who seek long-term investment, such as overseas university funds, foundations and pension funds, by investing in assets related to real estate, etc. in Japan and other Asian countries.
Star Asia has accumulated a track record of investment management by investing flexibly through multiple approaches including investment in real estate-related debt and in companies and such owning real estate in addition to in real estate itself.
Star Asia Group will, based on the sponsor support agreement, promote growth of SAR through various support measures such as provision of market/property information and know-how on real estate investment which the group has gained and accumulated via experience.
