JLL on Tuesday announced the promotion of Alex Barnes to managing director for Hong Kong and Macau, succeeding Gavin Morgan.
Currently head of agency leasing at JLL Hong Kong, Barnes in his new role will lead the global property consultancy in its ongoing strategic initiatives and expansion of the business in Hong Kong and Macau, the company said in a release. The appointment takes effect on 1 June.
“Alex has a strong track record at the company and played a critical role in growing our office leasing business successfully over the last decade,” said Bessie Lee, chief executive of JLL in Greater China. “I am confident that Alex is well-positioned to assume the role as the managing director for Hong Kong and Macau. We look forward to seeing the firm reach new levels of success under Alex’s leadership in the two cities.”
Mingtiandi understands that Morgan, a Northern Ireland native, is leaving for family reasons and plans to return to Europe.
Leasing Track Record
Barnes joined JLL in 2005 and has led the company’s office leasing advisory since 2018. He was given additional responsibility for retail and industrial leasing since his promotion to agency leasing head in 2021.
In that short span of time, Barnes had made a substantial impact and driven efficiency in the business structure throughout the challenging periods and achieved solid results, JLL said.
A graduate of Queensland University of Technology, Barnes previously worked for five years at Australian real estate agency PRDnationwide.
“I am honoured to lead our extraordinary team in Hong Kong and Macau and have confidence that together we will drive the next generation of our growth in this dynamic market,” Barnes said. “I look forward to collaborating to deliver solutions for our clients and highlighting our strength across the wider Hong Kong and Macau business communities.”
Over and Out
Morgan has served as managing director for Hong Kong since mid-2019, having moved steadily up the ranks at JLL since leaving CBRE in Northern Ireland in 2001.
After a decade on the office team, Morgan was named deputy managing director for Hong Kong and chairman of JLL’s global office leasing group in 2011, before being bumped up to chief operating officer for Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau and head of leasing in early 2012.
Lee thanked Morgan for his “extraordinary contribution” to JLL over the last 20 years.
“His leadership over the past three years has seen us grow our revenues in Hong Kong substantially,” she said.
