Asia Real Estate People in the News 2019-05-06

2019/05/06 by James Hatton Leave a Comment

In this week’s edition of People in the News, hard times for a luxury residential developer and a mainland co-working operator may have prompted some job searches in China, while May brings some fresh moves elsewhere including a promotion in Singapore at project management firm Turner and Townsend, and a jump from brokerage to hospitality in Shanghai. And in Hong Kong a leading broker appoints a new director of Hong Kong markets.

Former Tahoe Group executive vice president Jinyuan Zhang made a clean break from the cash-strapped luxury developer by moving to rival Beijing Tianrun Land Group as President. The Stanford-educated real estate executive was at Tahoe Group for three years from 2016, before which he served as vice president of China Fortune Land Development for one year. From 2011 to 2015, Zhang was general manager of strategy, investment, sales and marketing at top three mainland developer China Vanke.

May brought good news for Brian Shuptrine who stepped up to Managing Director for Southeast Asia at Turner and Townsend, the construction management firm that has assisted with large-scale Singapore projects including GlaxoSmithKline’s new global headquarters and the long-planned high speed rail link between Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Shuptrine has worked at Turner and Townsend since 2006, based in Singapore, Tokyo, and Sydney, serving most recently as Director for Singapore. A holder of bachelor’s degrees in Civil Engineering and Construction Management, Shuptrine was also a project manager for AMP and Smith Madden Group in Sydney, from 2002 until 2006.

Chris Lee has taken over as head of retail leasing at Kerry Properties (Shenzhen) Ltd, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed property developer Kerry Properties. The graduate of Guangdong University joins his new employer from K11 Concept, the developer of art-inspired retail and residential complexes led by New World Development heir Adrian Cheng. Lee managed leasing for K11’s Art Mall Hong Kong and Guangzhou projects from 2013 until this year.

June Guo continued her ascent in the heady world of co-working by joining Guangzhou-headquartered Atlaspace as assistant to the flexible office provider’s president based in Shanghai office. Guo joins from workplace solution rival Kr Space, who are currently facing challenging times after walking out on a $63.8 million lease in April, where she was Shanghai area director from August 2018 to April 2019. Prior to her Kr Space stint, the Shanghai Institute of Tourism graduate worked for two other flexible space providers – first as senior centre manager for Lampl Business Center in Shanghai, from 2009 to 2012, then as senior area manager for Regus, from 2012 to 2018.

Ryan Tong has been appointed as JLL’s director of Hong Kong markets, joining from Colliers International’s Hong Kong office where he was director of office services for nine years. A holder of a bachelor’s degree from the UK’s York University, Tong served as Executive Consultant for Banking and IT at Hong Kong recruitment firm Global Executive Consultants from 2008 until 2010, and as Operations Manager for Special Projects at child movie star Brock Pierce’s IGE, a virtual currency business.

Max Cassidy has joined global hospitality group Hilton as Cluster Revenue Manager, moving from Colliers International’s Shanghai office, where he worked for almost three years. As a manager of capital markets and investment services for Colliers, Cassidy advised on acquisition and disposition strategies in Eastern China for big-ticket clients such as Allianz, Keppel Corporation, and Starwood Capital, assisting with several deals in Shanghai including the $115 million purchase of the Kailong Information Building and the $68 million sale City of Elite Buildings 6 and 8.

Darryl Ng has stepped up to Executive Director of Information and Technology for Asia with Colliers, based in their Shanghai office, having spent the previous two years as the company’s Senior Director of Information and Technology. The ITIL-certified information technology professional has almost twenty years’ experience in system administration, network infrastructure management, project management, budget planning as well as office expansion and relocation in Asia Pacific.
