ARA Hires JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley Veteran to Lead New Fund Launches

Singapore-based real estate investment specialists ARA Asset Management has brought on board former JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley executive Stephen Tang to fill a key role with its private funds division, Mingtiandi has learned.

Stephen Tang, who most recently served as Managing Director with JP Morgan Asset Management’s Global Real Assets division, will be joining ARA Private Funds this month as Head of Capital Markets and Origination.

At ARA, the 20-year industry veteran Tang will be responsible for launching new investment vehicles for ARA Private Funds within the region as well as for capital raising. The MIT graduate will also lead the group’s origination of new opportunities across the region, with a specific focus on off market, alternative, portfolio and structured investments.

In his newly created role in Singapore, Tang will report to ARA Private Funds CEO Ng Beng Tiong, as the real estate investment house adjust to its new status as a privately held concern. ARA founder and CEO John Lim, together with private equity giant Warburg Pincus and China’s AVIC Trust, led a buyout of the asset manager which received regulatory approval from Singapore authorities in February of this year.

In addition to his prior role with JP Morgan, Tang was also based in Shanghai with Morgan Stanley Real Estate Investing from 2007 through 2012, where he served as its Chief Operating Officer for Greater China. Tang started out his career in acquisitions at GE Capital Investment Advisors in San Francisco with subsequent capital markets roles at Prudential Real Estate Investors, MetLife Investments and Morgan Stanley.
