Australia’s pipeline of multi-family residential projects more than doubled last year, as rising home prices and friendlier policies encouraged developers and investors to target the fledgling sector.

To better understand the forces driving the surge in Aussie build-to-rent activity, Mingtiandi has organised a panel session dedicated to the sector at 10:00 AM Hong Kong time on Tuesday, 29 March, and invited some of the industry’s biggest players to share their insights on our MTD TV interactive video channel.

Joining us will be speakers from Hines, Ivanhoe Cambridge, Scape and Melbourne-based developer Perri Projects, as we explore what investors can expect from the multi-family market Down Under.

The one-hour session, which is sponsored by Yardi, is the fourth programme in the Mingtiandi APAC Residential Forum 2022, which has already pulled in more than 2,000 viewers as we cover top opportunities in markets around the region.

Home Prices Jump

With average home prices across Australia have risen by more than 25 percent last year, a growing number of the country’s professionals are renting for longer periods of time, providing opportunities for investors and developers.

Joining us to discuss the potential of this fast-growing market will be Sam Bisla, head of living for Australia at Hines, which has now taken on two multi-family projects in Melbourne, as well as Laurent Fischler, head of investments for Asia Pacific at Ivanhoé Cambridge, which is backing Greystar’s Australian multi-family vehicle.

Also on the roster is Stephen Gaitanos, managing director and Group CEO for student accommodation specialist Scape, which is broadening its offerings to include more traditional rental housing and David Scalzo, managing director with award-winning Melbourne developer Perri Projects.

Our four panelists all have direct experience with multi-family investments in Australia, and will be able to share details on the potential returns from build-to-rent strategies in the country.

Debt Financing and Logistics

The session on Tuesday will be followed just two days later by the fifth and final show in the Mingtiandi APAC Residential Forum when we dive into the Trends in Residential Finance panel.

The show will feature Nick Shi, global head of real estate investment with Haitong International, Trent Winduss, head of Asia secured debt investments and head of Australian investments for Phoenix Property Investors, Paul Brindley, head of debt advisory for the capital market team at JLL Asia Pacific and Joel H Rothstein, shareholder and chair of the Asia real estate practice at Greenberg Traurig.

Following the conclusion of the residential forum, MTD TV will be back in May with our Asia Logistics Forum, which will feature panels on markets in mainland China, Japan, Korea, emerging markets and innovation.
