This week is all about growth at Rightsite. We added our first intern, Anne, and hired two more to start next week. While your accountant might tell you that more headcount is a bad thing, we are here to build websites, not to do accounting. So more staff means more stuff gets done (provided we don’t completely screw it up).
Having gotten our website underway (which still means daily site planning meetings) we are now turning our super-concentrated laser gaze to getting some content ready for our site. We will have many different types of content in Rightsite, but since we are an industrial property website, all of it will revolve around industrial property. Our first major data entry project is building a list of all the industrial zones in China.
Winni the Wonder Assistant has already found the names of more than 1000 of these zones, and now we are bringing in the intern team to get the details of all the zones into our system. Meanwhile, Winni will keep adding to her own name list (it seems that there are more than 4500 industrial zones total in China, but some are bit harder to find than others).
Getting all this information into the system means making use of some of China’s ample labour resources. So our friend Mr Computer Guy was called to add a few more workstations to the Tongren Lu supernetwork.
Pretty amazing that we can add machines with 2gb of RAM, 160gb hard drives and 17″ flat screen monitors at RMB 2900 each. (Now if only we could all work as fast as our computers).
Anne joins us from the Communication University of China (up there in Beijing) where she is still a fourth year student. She’s only working four days each week while she’s still in school, but we are happy for all the help we can get.
At my previous company, we made extensive use of interns and found it to be a great way to recruit new talent. Some of our most dedicated employees started as interns, and several of them worked their way up to being managers. Hiring interns means a lot of care taken to training in the early stages, but if you put this time in, they can be a great asset.
Next week we will have Cindy and Joyce joining us from LaSalle College of Design. We will keep you posted when they join and hope to see all of you next week.
Have a great weekend!

Impressive military bearing demonstrated by Ms Anne there. That’s the spirit. Btw I see the project plan item ‘recruit marketing team’ commences just about now. I await the headhunters’ calls…
