James is the Managing Partner & Chief Investment Officer at Seraya Partners.
Prior to Seraya Partners, James was formerly Head of Asia, Managing Director, Investment Committee member, and a founding member of I Squared Capital, a global infrastructure fund manager with US$ 40 Bn AUM from 2012 to 2020. He founded and led the Asia business during that period. He was Chairman of portfolio companies in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Southeast Asia, across sectors including solar and wind, water treatment, LNG gas, data centre, telecommunications, and waste-to-energy.
From 2006 to 2012, James was at Morgan Stanley in Hong Kong. He started as an M&A banker and was subsequently Head of China for a US$ 4 Bn global infrastructure fund, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners, a part of Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM) and Merchant Banking Group. He invested in renewable energy and transport sectors in China and India and was part of the fund’s global review committee.
From 1999 to 2004, James was an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley and founded a software company that was subsequently sold to a Singapore real estate conglomerate. He was educated at Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania (MBA in Finance) and Cornell University (Bachelor of Architecture). He has been a guest speaker at NUS, School of Engineering and HKUST Business School, Hong Kong. He is currently a Board Member of Hwa Chong Institution.
