Apple will open its eleventh store in China on Saturday as the US electronics firm continues to enjoy mad popularity in the world’s second-largest economy, despite recent criticism from local media.

The latest official outlet for Apple will be at the Paradise Walk mall in the western China city of Chongqing, making this only the third Apple Store in the country to be located outside of Shanghai or Beijing.

The opening of the new store was announced in low-key ad on the company’s website, as well as with a large billboard on display at the mall in Chongqing’s Jiangbei district.

The Chongqing store is expected to be followed later this year by the opening of new outlets in Hangzhou, Shenyang, Tianjin, Wuxi, and Zhengzhou – and is said to be currently be recruiting staff in all of these second-tier Chinese cities.

Apple’s industry leading iPhone came under attack from China’s state-owned broadcasting firm CCTV earlier this month in a new show that accused the popular smart phone of have features that can collect data and steal state secrets.

Last year the TV network took Apple to task for having a dual-standard on customer service alleging that the electronics manufacturer was repairing faulty iPhones in China that would have simply been replaced in other markets.
