When Ronnie Chan took over from his father to become chairman of Hang Lung Group in 1991, his youngest son was only nine years old. Some 25 years later Adriel Wenbwo Chan has been named an executive director at Hang Lung Group and its property investment arm, Hang Lung Properties. The third generation of Chan’s to take a senior position with the blue-chip Hong Kong developer, Adriel Chan assumed his new duties last week.
The younger Chan first joined Hang Lung in 2010, looking after leasing and management at the firm. In his new role, he will be responsible for overseeing various departments including project planning and project construction.
Adriel Chan’s appointment to the Hong Kong-listed firm’s board of directors sets him clearly in his father’s footsteps. Much like Ronnie Chan, Adriel Chan attended the University of Southern California, where he studied international relations. Adriel’s grandfather, Chan Tseng-hsi, founded the company in 1960.
Of course, Adriel has a lot of work to do if he is to build upon his dad’s legacy. The mall developer who once boasted to be the Brad Pitt of mainland retail real estate recently admitted that the current business environment has never been so difficult and noted more challenges could be ahead.
