Asia’s investment centre of gravity continues to shift toward Japan this week with one of the biggest US fund managers naming a new country head for Asia’s second largest economy. With that item leading Mingtiandi’s roundup of personnel moves from around the region, also making the list is a new executive at a multi-family office and a pair of moves at Singapore’s GIC.
Global private equity firms continue to ramp up their presence in Asia’s second-largest economy with Ares Management announcing on 8 July that it has appointed Masahiko Oshima as partner and chairman of Japan for its Ares Asia unit. Oshima has more than 40 years of experience in banking and finance, including having served as deputy chairman of Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
Raffles Family Office said on 11 July that it has appointed Terence Chow as group chief operating officer with effect from 2 July. Chow will also be joining the multi-family office’s board of management, according to the statement. Chow climbs aboard with Raffles Family office in Hong Kong after having served most recently as chief executive for Asia with the wealth management unit of Royal Bank of Canada.
Emily Chew has joined GIC in Singapore as head of sustainability for the sovereign wealth fund, according to a LinkedIn update. Chew joined GIC after spending more than three years as an executive vice president with Morgan Stanley’s Calvert Research and Management unit in New York. She also has previous experience as global head of sustainability for Morgan Stanley.
Paul Baxter is now regional managing director for global workplace solutions in Asia Pacific for CBRE while also being named regional sector director for the technology, media and telecommunications sector, according to a LinkedIn update. Baxter joined CBRE in August of last year after having previously served for just over a year as chief executive officer of regional design and build firm Unispace.
Royce Zhan has joined GIC in Singapore as an assistant vice president, per a LinkedIn post. Zhan joined the sovereign wealth fund this month after just under three years at property consultancy Knight Frank in the city-state, where he ranked as an associate director while serving as a capital strategies analyst. Zhan also previously worked with with Real Capital Analytics, now MSCI Real Estate.
Marcus Chioh has taken a step up at Oxford Properties Group in Singapore, where he now serves as an associate for investment with the Canadian pension fund manager’s Asia Pacific team, per a LinkedIn update. Chioh takes on the new role after two and a half years as an analyst with the investment team. The graduate of Singapore Management University also has previous experience with Prologis and ARA Asset Management.
Knight Frank’s Hong Kong operation has promoted Cyrus Fong to executive director and head of valuations and advisory for Greater China, according to an announcement by the company. The graduate of the University of Hong Kong took his step up after more than eight years as a senior director with the valuation and advisory team at the property consultancy, with his new role adding mainland China responsibilities to his existing Hong Kong remit.
Jenny Chew has rejoined JLL in Singapore as head of pricing for Asia Pacific, following a brief career break. Before heading off on a sabbatical in August last year, Chew had served as country director for Singapore and Southeast Asia for CBRE’s global workplace solutions division for just under two years. Earlier, Chew had spent more than 14 years with JLL in Singapore.
