Greater China’s real estate professionals still aren’t taking a break for the summer, as a veteran Shanghai private equity player moves to Hong Kong, and a Beijing-based real estate attorney heads back to the US. Also, a local fund manager finds a new home, and much more. Read on for details.
Melissa Mao is joining Gaw Capital as Senior Director of Asset Management with the real estate private equity firm. In her new position, Mao, who formerly served more than eight years with Morgan Stanley Real Estate, will be looking after Gaw’s office assets on the mainland. Along with the new role comes a new city for Mao, who is relocating to Hong Kong after spending the previous 17 years of her professional career in Shanghai.
Joel Rothstein, formerly with law firm Paul Hastings in Beijing has already left the country, relocating to Los Angeles to join Sidley Austin LLP. In his new role as a partner in the law firm’s real estate group, Rothstein will continue his focus on structured finance, complex joint ventures and cross-border transactions in both the United States and Asia. In his prior position, Rothstein led the Asia real estate and structured finance practices for Paul Hastings.
Fei (Shawn) Chen has joined Green Court Investments in Shanghai as Assistant President and Head of Real Estate Funds. Chen joined the Shanghai-listed finance firm in June after spending nearly two and a half years with Sunyat Capital in Shanghai, most recently as a Partner. In his new position, the Fudan University graduate will take the lead responsibility for Green Court’s real estate funds, which invest both in China and the US.
Bonnie Mak has been promoted to the role of Director with the Global Corporate Services team at CBRE in Singapore. Mak’s step up comes after the City University of London graduate spent the last five years with the real estate agency as an associate director on the same team. In total, Mak has now been with the US-based company 15 years, since joining as an Account Manager after finishing her master’s degree in the UK.
Alex Cai has now been promoted to Manager with JLL’s research team in Chengdu, Sichuan. Cai specialises in covering the retail market in western China, including the cities of Chongqing, Xi’an and Kunming, in addition to Chengdu. The Southwestern University of Finance and Economics graduate was promoted after spending just one year as an assistant manager with the research team, and has now been with JLL since 2012.
