Asia Real Estate People in the News 2020-05-25

In this week’s edition of People in the News, a Morgan Stanley spinoff appoints a new head of real estate coverage for Asia Pacific, while the manager of a Keppel Capital-backed REIT has brought on board a former Maybank Kim Eng chief as CEO and CFO.

In other moves around the region, a brokerage consulting veteran has headed back west to Chengdu and WeWork sees one of its original China hires head for the exit as the co-working giant continues to scale back.

There were also fresh moves at Cindat Capital Management and Sun Hung Kai Properties.

Varun Malik has been appointed as head of APAC real estate client coverage for MSCI in Singapore, after parting ways with Mitsubishi UFG. Malik had served as the Japanese bank’s head of real estate coverage as well as helming its acquisition finance division from June 2019 until May this year. Prior to joining Mitsubishi UFG, the holder of a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Cambridge had served as a director in Standard Chartered’s real estate division with responsibility for Southeast Asia and Australia from 2010 to 2019.

Harmeet Singh Bedi has been appointed as deputy CEO and CFO at KBS US Prime Property Management, the manager of Keppel Capital-backed KBS US Prime REIT. Bedi joins the trust manager after serving almost six years as CEO of financial services company Maybank Kim Eng in Singapore, following four and a half years as head of corporate finance and M&A for Southeast Asia at UBS from 2009 to 2014. Prior to that the graduate of Ahmedabad’s St Xavier’s College had served as Merrill Lynch’s head of corporate finance for Southeast Asia from 2007 to 2009.

Leye He has been hired by CBRE in Chengdu as the company’s head of West China consulting , after parting ways with JLL. The graduate of Australia National University picked his set of green and white name cards after having served as a senior director for JLL in Shanghai for ten months. Prior to that stint in eastern China, He had spent over two years as managing director of JLL’s Chongqing office, following five years as the company’s head of strategic consulting in Xian from 2015 to 2019.

YC Lam has been promoted to vice president at Beijing-based cross-border investment specialist Cindat Capital Management, stepping up after two years and five months as a senior associate. Lam originally joined Cindat in 2015 as an associate. following three and a half years as a deputy director at Sotheby’s International Realty in Taiwan from 2012 to 2015. The University of Michigan graduate also served as an equity research associate in Hong Kong for Primasia Securities from 2010 to 2012.

Joshua Li has parted ways with WeWork after four and a half years with the troubled co-working company. Part of the original team which opened WeWork in Shanghai, Li had served most recently as a community expansion lead for the company’s China business, fulfilling that role for a year and a half from November 2018 to May 2020 in addition to his role as impact lead for China. Prior to joining WeWork, Li had served as a director at Shanghai-based developer Anken Management from 2008 to 2015.

Kinki Chow has been appointed as an assistant leasing manager at Sun Hung Kai Properties in Hong Kong, after leaving Sunlight REIT. Chow had served as a senior leasing officer for the Hong Kong-listed REIT for two years, following just over a year with Colliers International from March 2017 to May 2018. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University graduate had served as a property officer in CBRE’s asset services team in 2017 after joining as a graduate trainee in 2015.
