As those of you bored enough to read this blog regularly may recall, we at RightSite are big fans of the email platform MailChimp, which we use to send our weekly email newsletter.
The main reason that we get so excited about this utility is the fantastic amount of data that it provides about what our readers are up to. We now have more than 10,000 subscribers to the RightSite newsletter, and by being able to see what articles they read, who reads them and where these people are, RightSite can continually fine tune the content and presentation of the newsletter.
But in studying the Mailchimp stats today I ran across a metric that I had not noticed before, the email client figures. And the results are a bit shocking. According to Mailchimp, more than 35% of the users reading the RightSite newsletter do so on an iPhone, making it the number one mail client among our users. Granted, if you combined the numbers for Outlook 2010 (6.3%) with the users of Outlook 2007 (33.5%) it would be highest, but this does not make the iPhone number much less surprising.
Also interesting to see was that Yahoo (with 6.8%) outscored Gmail at 1.7%. And what are all those people still doing on Lotus Notes??
