A senior-level promotion at the world’s largest private equity firm leads this week’s review of personnel moves from around Asia, with Blackstone promoting a top member of its Singapore-based team. Also making the cut is Partners Group losing its head in Japan and UBS Asset Management naming a new leader for its global real estate business.
Blackstone has promoted Singapore-based Peng-Wei Tan to senior managing director, according to a LinkedIn update. Tan took his step up this month after more than 12 years with the company, where he has been involved in transactions including the purchase of the Sandcrawler building in Singapore and the firm’s acquisitions of GE Capital’s Japanese and Australian property portfolios. Just this past week Blackstone announced major changes to its leadership with global co-head of real estate Ken Caplan being promoted to global co-CIO and Nadeem Meghji taking over Caplan’s former role.
Former Partners Group head of Japan Teppei Kawai has left the company after less than one year, according to a LinkedIn update. The Swiss investment management firm had announced its hiring of the former Apollo Global Management executive in late January of 2023 as the company identified Japan as a key growth market. Kawai’s LinkedIn profile currently indicates that he is self-employed and news of his departure was first reported by PERE.
UBS Asset Management has promoted Jon Hollick to head of global real estate, excluding central Europe, according to a report in London’s React News. Hollick’s appointment comes after UBS took over Credit Suisse last year with Hollick having served with UBS since 2010. Prior to this latest promotion, the University of Birmingham graduate had been head of European real estate (excluding central Europe) and chief investment officer for UBS AM’s real estate and private markets team.
Anne Valentine Andrews, global head of infrastructure and real estate at BlackRock has left the company after nearly a decade leading the division of the world’s largest asset manager, with her company bio page now returning an error message. Andrews’ departure comes just weeks after BlackRock’s head of Asia Pacific real estate John Saunders left the company. On Friday, BlackRock announced its acquisition of General Infrastructure Partners (GIP), with that company’s founder Adebayo Ogunlesi set to join BlackRock’s board.
Former China Everbright Group chairman and party head Tang Shuangning has been expelled from the communist party for serious violations of party discipline and laws, according to an official statement earlier this month. With China Everbright having been among the largest lenders to the country’s real estate sector, Tang was found to have accepted large bribes in return for approving loans.
Former CapitaLand Investment executive Patrick Boocock is joining energy infrastructure firm Ausgrid as chief financial officer, according to an announcement by the Sydney-based firm. Boocock, whose departure from CapitaLand was announced last month, is set to take on his new role in March and had led the Temasek Holdings-backed company’s alternative investment business after more than eight years at Brookfield.
Savills announced earlier this month that it has promoted Ricky Lau to managing director of its leasing division for Hong Kong. In his new role, Lau, who has been with the property consultancy since 2006, will oversee the firm’s leasing business in the city as he takes his step up from deputy managing director and head of office leasing. In the same notice, Savills said it had given its managing director of agency for Macau, Franco Liu, the additional role of head of property management for the city.
Korea’s MBK Partners announced earlier this month that it has promoted Kim Kwang Il, a partner in the firm, to vice chairman. Kim moved up a notch after first joining the Seoul-based company in 2005 with his experience including leading MBK’s investments in supermarket chain Homeplus and in home decoration firm Modern House. In the same annoucement, MBK said it had promoted Moon Joo Ho, currently a partner who heads special situations for Korea, to vice president.
Sienna Investment Managers has promoted Hazel Cho Hee-Young to managing director and head of Korea, according to a recent announcement by the company. Cho took on her new role from 1 January, after more than two years with the French firm, where she previously served as director of acquisitions. Cho also has previous experience with Hangang Asset Management, Samsung Life Insurance and Phoenix Property Investors.
