Tom Gaffney Joins CBRE as Head of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau

Tom Gaffney will step into his new role at the end of March

Real estate agency CBRE today announced that Tom Gaffney has been appointed as Managing Director for its Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan offices, and will assume his new role as of the end of March 2016.

Gaffney comes to CBRE from competitor JLL where he headed the firm’s retail services division for Hong Kong and China, and was a member of JLL’s global retail board, as well as serving as its co-chair for retail in the Asia Pacific region. The Queensland University of Technology graduate came to JLL in 2011 from Hong Kong Land, and also had previous experience managing retail projects in Bangkok, Thailand.

“Tom has proven ability to build strong teams, excellent client relationships and market leading positions. He quickly emerged as a standout candidate and we are thrilled to have him join us at CBRE,” said Ben Duncan, President of North Asia for CBRE.

Gaffney takes over his new role from Craig Shute, who recently was reported to have taken on a position overseeing the real estate portfolio for Adelaide, Australia’s municipal airport. Shute is expected to begin his new role in Adelaide during February of next year after 17 years with CBRE.

The changeover from Shute to Gaffney is one of a number of changes in the agency’s senior management in the region this month, including the recent resignation of former China chief Chris Brooke and the abrupt departure of China President Ivan Poon. At least two more high level directors of the real estate agency’s operations in Greater China have either resigned or left CBRE in recent weeks after what some observers say was a disappointing year financially.
