Stephen Gaitanos, Managing Director & Group CEO, Scape

Stephen is a founder, Group CEO and Managing Director of Scape Group with over 16000 student rooms operational nationally across Scape, a further 6,000 under development. Scape has invested over $9 billion into Australia’s education market over eight years with a further $1 billion to be invested in the current pipeline. Scape Group is the largest private commercial investor in the education market in Australia and the largest owner-operator of residential accommodation for lease in Australia.

As CEO of Scape, Stephen is responsible for the Scape Group’s platform in Australia, a position he has held since November 2013.

Stephen is a founding principal of Telopea Capital Partners and has 17 years’ real estate investment, private equity and investment banking experience in Australia, Asia and Europe.

Stephen has previously held real estate investing and corporate finance positions with Morgan Stanley Real Estate, Merrill Lynch and Macquarie Bank.

Stephen has significant experience within the student accommodation sector in Australia (previously Executive Director and shareholder of PAD Student Living), leisure, hospitality, affordable housing & education asset classes in Australia.

Scape launched in Australia in 2014 and has since become the biggest purpose-built student accommodation (PBSA) owner and operator.

Scape is home to over 18,500 beds in 38 buildings across Australia’s four key educational precincts – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide – as well as 10 buildings in planning and development, which will bring the portfolio to 23,000 beds by 2025.

Scape employs more than 800 people and is the largest investor in Australia’s higher education sector, with $6 billion (AUD) in capital committed since 2018.
