Dyson Pays S$74M for Singapore’s Priciest Penthouse Ever

2019/07/11 by James Hatton Leave a Comment

Sir James Dyson is checking the levels on his weapon of choice in preparation for a big clean at his new 21,108 sq ft penthouse

Britain’s pioneer of bagless vacuum cleaners and bladeless fans, James Dyson, has already broken new ground in his adopted home of Singapore, with the billionaire reportedly paying the highest price ever for an apartment in the city-state.

The man who made hoovers cool is reportedly paying S$73.8 million ($55 million) for his new “super penthouse”, according to local media. The purchase tops the S$60 million that Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin is said to have paid for his city pad in 2017.

Singapore Land Authority registration documents, filed on 20 June, list Sir James Dyson and Lady Deirdre Jessie Dyson, his wife, as the owners of penthouse 62-01 at 3 Wallich Street, the address of Guoco Land’s 290-metre tall Guoco Tower project.

Dyson’s purchase comes six months after the Brexit-backer courted accusations of double-standards when he announced that his company would be moving its corporate headquarters from the UK to Singapore, where the maker of supersonic hairdryers is building a factory that will manufacture electric cars.

Following an email enquiry from the Mingtiandi team, Dyson HQ confirmed today that Sir James will be using a Dyson V11 Torque Vacuum to clean the penthouse’s 21,108 square feet (1,961 square metres).

Six Bathrooms, Five Bedrooms and a Private Pool

The household appliance inventor’s new slice of Singapore sky spans the top three floors of the tower near the Tanjong Pagar waterfront and includes six bathrooms, five bedrooms, a private swimming pool, and a jacuzzi room. The property which had earlier carried an asking price of $100 million, also comes equipped with bar facilities and a private garden overlooking the city’s Marina Bay Sands,

Completed three years ago, the Guoco Tower is the city’s tallest structure and incorporates 890,000 square feet of grade A offices, a 100,000 square foot retail podium, and a five-star hotel, in addition to the twenty-five storeys of luxury apartments where the fan baron will be setting up his new abode.

According to luxury brokerage List Sotheby’s International Realty, which marketed the apartment, the building’s concierge team is on hand to assist residents with a range of services, “whether it is chartering a yacht or a private jet or arranging a private chef to cater for a dinner party.”

Dyson Beats Facebook and Alibaba Co-founders to Top Spot

Dyson’s purchase exceeds the price Saverin paid for his 10,300 square foot penthouse on the top floor of the 36-storey Sculptura Ardmore two years ago by just under S$14 million.

That purchase broke the record set by Sun Tongyu, a co-founder of Alibaba, in 2015 when the tech billionaire shelled out S$51 million for a 13,874 square foot penthouse at Le Nouvel Ardmore in 2015.

Sun’s penthouse now ranks fourth among Singapore’s priciest apartments after an unidentified buyer, said to be a Chinese national, last month purchased an 11,098 square foot penthouse in Boulevard Vue in the city’s Tanglin area for S$52 million.

Sales of luxury homes grew 19 percent in Singapore during the first half of this year compared with the last six months of 2018, according to List Sotheby’s.

The property brokerage said the much of the uptick was attributable to the March launch of a new luxury development, Boulevard 88 on Orchard Boulevard, in March. 59 homes in the 154-unit project have since been sold, including the four penthouses priced between S$28.00 million and S$31.00 million.
