Harry Winston and Marimekko Join the China Retail Crowd

2012/05/05 by Michael Cole Leave a Comment

Harry Winston and Marimekko Open Shops in ChinaYet more proof that China is becoming the retail capital of the world this week as two more major retail brands announced new shops in the country.

First, American jeweler to the stars, Harry Winston brought the bling to China as they opened their first boutique at Xintiandi in Shanghai. The free-standing, 580 square metre shop was launched with a gala grand opening that featured the stars of US TV’s  “Gossip Girl.”

According to industry figures, China has become Asia’s biggest retail market for diamonds, so it’s no surprise that more companies are interested in setting up shops to peddle shiny things to the nation’s pretty people.

Also this week, Finnish fashion brand Marimekko (wait, Finland makes something besides Nokias and reindeer?) celebrated the opening of its first retail store in Hong Kong. At the same time, the company stated that it plans to open an outlet in Shanghai as soon as it can located proper premises.

According to Marimekko’s management, the creator of clothes and textile designs will open another 13 shops in China before the end of 2016. Already, Japan is the company’s second largest market after Finland.
