The second annual Mingtiandi Tokyo Forum is just nine days away and will bring together over 250 decision makers from Asia Pacific’s real estate investment community for a day of discussions and thought leadership in and about the region’s most active market.

Japan led Asia Pacific in the third quarter with real estate transaction volume of $10.3 billion, up 23 percent year-on-year, largely driven by a surge in multi-family investment to levels unseen since early 2020, according to JLL. Tokyo’s office market is also thriving, the consultancy said, with Grade A vacancy at 1.4 percent and rents climbing 5 to 6 percent year-on-year.

To take a closer look at the megatrends driving Japan real estate — including what to expect from the new government led by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi — the all-day forum at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Tokyo will feature a keynote panel with senior leaders from Alyssa Partners, Invesco Real Estate, EQT Real Estate, TE Capital Partners and Tokyo Trust Capital.

The forum takes place on Wednesday 5 November and consists of 11 sessions covering sectors including hospitality, residential, industrial and commercial, as well as featuring a panel on the growing role of Japanese capital globally. Tickets to the forum are available at the link above.

Powerful Panel

As the founder, managing partner and CEO of Alyssa Partners, Chedli Boujellabia leads a firm with JPY 300 billion ($2 billion) in assets under management. With its latest buy of a central Tokyo apartment complex, Alyssa boosted its multi-family AUM beyond JPY 200 billion as the firm’s residential portfolio grew to more than 6,000 apartment units in key cities of Japan.

Calvin Chou is head of Asia Pacific at Invesco Real Estate, a manager of $82.6 billion in assets globally. Based in Asia since 2000, Chou joined Invesco Real Estate in 2015 after spending 17 years at Morgan Stanley in New York, Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Tokyo-based Michio Matsumoto leads real estate investment strategy and operations in Japan for EQT, the Swedish private equity house managing €267 billion ($311 billion) in assets. With 30 years of experience in Japan’s real estate industry, Matsumoto most recently served as executive officer and head of investments at KKR’s KJR Management from October 2023 to February of this year.

At Singapore-headquartered TE Capital Partners, Stanley Shen leads investment strategies across Asia Pacific with a focus on Japan, Singapore and Australia. TE Capital and its subsidiaries manage more than S$3 billion ($2.3 billion) in assets across Singapore, Japan, Australia and the US.

The panel also welcomes Christopher Handte, chief executive of TE Capital-backed Tokyo Trust Capital, which has consummated real estate investment transactions in Japan and the US totalling over $900 million. Handte previously led BlackRock’s real estate business in Japan from 2015 to 2022.

Warburg, Brookfield Interviews

The Mingtiandi Tokyo Forum is headlined by spotlight interviews with Takashi Murata, co-head of Asia Pacific real estate for Warburg Pincus and Andrew Burych, head of east Asia real estate for Brookfield Asset Management, with more than 20 speakers set to take the stage.

A third spotlight interview session will feature a team from Deloitte Tohmatsu Group to explore solutions to challenges facing global investors in the Japan market, with special insights into corporate buyout considerations for real estate investors.

A panel on hospitality and tourism in Japan will bring together Suchad Chiaranussati, chairman and founder of SC Capital Partners; Abhijay Sandilya, managing director for Japan and Micronesia at IHG Hotels & Resorts; Bryan Lee, founder and CFO of AB Capital Investment; and Gary Kwok, CEO and managing partner of Axe Management, for a look at opportunities linked to travel growth in Japan.

With Japanese investors playing a growing role in backing deals globally, a session on outbound capital will feature Sam Bisla, founder and managing director with Kio Investment Management; Christopher Garbe, managing partner at GARBE; and Hayato Tsuji, general manager with the real estate finance department at the Development Bank of Japan.
