Keppel Tops Out Second of Three Data Centres at Singapore Campus

Keppel Ltd on Monday announced the structural completion of Keppel DC Singapore 8 as the developer’s latest data centre asset.

The purpose-built, carrier-neutral co-location facility is the second of three planned complexes within the Keppel Data Centre Campus at 82 Genting Lane in the city-state’s Geylang area, the Temasek Holdings-backed conglomerate said in a release.

The project was partly financed by Keppel’s private Alpha Data Centre Fund and occupies a site owned by Keppel and Cuscaden Peak in a 60:40 joint venture. Cuscaden Peak is a consortium of hotel tycoon Ong Beng Seng and his SGX-listed Hotel Properties, along with Temasek-backed CapitaLand and Mapletree.

“Together with our partner, Cuscaden Peak, we are pleased to mark the structural completion of our second data centre in the Keppel Data Centre Campus, which stands for our shared commitment to support the long-term growth of Singapore’s digital economy,” said Wong Wai Meng, Keppel’s data centre CEO.

Fully Leased Facility

The six-storey Keppel DC Singapore 8 is built to Tier 3 standards — which require redundant and dual-powered servers, network links and other components — and has a net lettable area of 100,882 square feet (9,372 square metres).

The facility is fully leased to clients from across the cloud services, internet enterprise and telecom sectors, Keppel said. The group’s data centre and networks division will serve as the operator and facility manager when the first phase of the complex is ready for service in the third quarter of 2024.

With a planned gross floor area of 659,612 square feet, the Keppel Data Centre Campus touts its sustainability practices. The first complex at the campus, Keppel DC Singapore 7, was awarded Green Mark Platinum status in 2022.

Keppel DC Singapore 8 features advanced equipment and designs that help to cut construction waste and water consumption and improve the efficiency of cooling and facility management systems to enable more sustainable operations, according to Keppel.

Shanghai Powers Up

Also on Monday, Keppel proclaimed its Shanghai data centre “ready for service”, with the facility targeting financial and banking sector clients as well as domestic and foreign cloud providers and internet enterprises.

Shanghai Data Centre 1 in the megacity’s suburban Qingpu district received partial backing from the private Keppel Data Centre Fund II and spans 239,239 square feet with accommodation for at least 30,000 servers.

Keppel’s data centre business, which was folded into the corporation’s main operating platform as part of a group restructuring last year, has Asia Pacific projects in Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia, in addition to Singapore and China. In Europe, the group has projects in Britain, Germany, Ireland, Italy and the Netherlands.
