Asia Real Estate People in the News 2024-01-22

Leading off this week’s collection of people moves from around the Asia is a senior-level move at one of Canada’s largest pension funds, with a new Korea appointment also making the list and one more Chinese official getting tripped up by the country’s anti-corruption campaign.

Karim Habra Partners GroupPartners Group announced this past week that it has hired Karim Habra, currently head of Europe and co-head of Asia Pacific at Ivanhoe Cambridge, as its global co-head of real estate. Habra, who has been with the Quebec pension fund manager since 2018, will be taking on his new position in mid-March where he will work alongside fellow co-head Mike Bryant, a partner in the firm who currently is the company’s sole global head of real estate. Habra’s move leaves Singapore-based George Agethen running Ivanhoe Cambridge’s Asia Pacific operations solo, with the Canadian institution having yet to make a statement on the leadership change.

Sungeon Ahn StonepeakStonepeak Partners has reportedly hired Sungeon Ah, currently chief country officer for South Korea at Deutsche Bank to help lead the US private equity firm’s business in the north Asian nation. Ahn, who has been with Deutsche Bank in Seoul since 2013, is expected to help grow Stonepeak’s operation in Korea, according to a Bloomberg account, with the firm focused on infrastructure investments including logistics, data centres and renewable energy.

Xiao Xing China TaipingFormer China Taiping Insurance executive Xiao Xing has been arrest on suspicion of taking bribes, making the Shanghai-educated former executive director the latest high level finance official to fall afoul of Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign. Xiao, who had been on China Taiping’s board of directors since 2020, was arrested by authorities in Henan province following an investigation, according to an account by official news agency Xinhua.

Chia Khong Shoong FrasersChia Khong Shoong has resigned from his role as a non-executive, non-independent director on the board of Frasers Logistics and Commercial Trust, according to an announcement by the REIT’s manager on 15 January. Chia will be leaving the board in March after five years as he steps down from his role as group chief corporate officer with Frasers Property, the sponsor of the Singapore-listed trust.

Mimi Li BelaMimi Lee has joined Bela Offices in Hong Kong as head of relationship management with the flexible office provider. Lee announced her new role with the Hong Kong-based firm this past week after more than seven years with The Executive Centre, where she had served most recently as deputy city head. The University of Hong Kong graduate also has previous experience with Wheelock Properties in the city.

Wei Xiaohua CR MixCChina Resources Mixc Lifestyle Services announced to the Hong Kong stock exchange on 15 January that Wei Xiahua retired from her role as an executive director on the company’s board with effect from that day. Wei had been appointed to the board of the property management unit of state-backed commercial developer China Resources Mixc in 2020 and had been with China Resources Group since 2003.

Ravi_Shankar_Singh ColliersColliers announced on 15 January that it has expanded into residential brokerage with the company appointing Ravi Shankar Singh to lead the new division. Now managing director for Collier’s residential transaction services division across India, Singh spent the last three years leading a timber processing venture which he founded in Nigeria and had held senior leadership positions in JLL’s India residential team from 2012 through 2018.

Anson Headshot SRISRI Pte Ltd announced on 15 January that it has appointed Anson Tay as managing partner of its international project marketing division with effect from the following day. Tay is expected to drive international project marketing for the Singapore property agency after joining from rival Propnex, where he had spent more than 13 years, including serving most recently as head of international market.
