EdgeConneX Enters Malaysian Data Centre Market with 300MW Project Pipeline

Data centre platform EdgeConneX on Monday announced its entry into Malaysia with a plan to develop 300 megawatts of capacity across three locations.

EdgeConneX, a hyperscale specialist backed by Swedish private equity firm EQT, aims to build facilities in the downtown business district of Kuala Lumpur, in suburban Bukit Jalil and in the Cyberjaya tech hub, it said in a release. The projects will give EdgeConneX a development presence in a fifth Asian market after previous initiatives in China, Indonesia, the Philippines and India.

Kelvin Fong, managing director for APAC, said EdgeConneX’s expansion into Malaysia will help meet high demand for scalable, high-capacity infrastructure across Asia Pacific.

“Our Malaysian data centre footprint will contribute to the nation’s digital economy, vibrant tech ecosystem, and passion for progress, fostering increased innovation and collaborative partnerships,” Fong said.

Cyberjaya Hyperscale Campus

The bulk of EdgeConneX’s planned capacity centres on a 200MW-plus hyperscale campus consisting of nine buildings spread over 30 acres (12.1 hectares) in Cyberjaya, a cluster of science and tech parks situated south of Kuala Lumpur.

In Bukit Jalil, an affluent suburb near the capital’s southern border with surrounding Selangor state, EdgeConneX seeks to develop nearly 70MW of capacity at a greenfield site in the MRANTI tech park.

Kuala Lumpur’s CBD, meanwhile, will host a 19MW facility providing customised, build-to-suit configurations, EdgeConneX said.

Speaking Tuesday on MTD TV, EdgeConneX APAC joint venture director Zhang Yi praised Malaysia’s digital transformation effort for creating a supportive environment for the data centre sector.

“We see the continuous and the long-term potential and demand in Malaysia, and also thanks to the Malaysian local government, which is actually very supportive and very ready to support our investment here,” Zhang said.

Regional Map Grows

After entering mainland China’s data centre market in 2021 via a joint venture with Hong Kong-based developer Chayora, EdgeConneX last year established JVs in the Philippines and Indonesia.

For the Philippine venture, EdgeConneX teamed with the infrastructure arm of Aboitiz Group to tap the local conglomerate’s 3,460 acre land bank of potential sites across Greater Manila to establish a data centre network.

In Indonesia, EdgeConneX took over local data centre JV GTN Data Centre from Mitsui and Lippo Group’s PT Multipolar Technology, positioning the developer to build a 90MW hyperscale data centre campus on an existing Jakarta site.

“The growth in Southeast Asia will continue at least in the next couple of years, especially because this is one of the largest populated regions in the world,” Zhang said Tuesday.

The Times of India reported in June that a JV of EdgeConneX and Adani Enterprises had raised $213 million to develop a combined 67MW of data centre capacity in Chennai and Noida. The news came after AdaniConneX in May said it would build a 200MW campus in Vizag on India’s east coast.
