Ground was broken recently on a 95,000 square metre crimson cultural centre in Shenzhen designed by Dutch architecture firm Mecanoo and developed by the local government in team with China Vanke.

The Three Cultural Centers & One Book Mall complex includes a public art museum, a science museum, a youth centre, and a five floor book mall. The goal of the project in Shenzhen’s Longcheng park is to provide a cultural centre to the city’s Longgang district.

Mecanoo beat out a field of competitors for the project with its design of a set of upside-down pyramids, which are designed to let foot traffic flow among the buildings. The project is the company’s first in mainland China.

According to the architect, when completed in 2017, the four building volumes of Three Cultural Centers & One Book Mall will emerge from the ground to create a series of arches and sheltered public event spaces.

Walkways will allow easy pedestrian access to the project

The designers say that they rounded the corners of the four buildings to “respect the natural flow of pedestrians through the site.”

The three cultural centres open outwards into the exterior public space, which Mecanoo says means that the structure is “literally absorbing the city in the exhibition.”
