Investors and advisors behind some of the region’s largest data centre investments will be appearing live on Mingtiandi this week to explore the potential for profit in this fast-growing but technically challenging market sector.
In an exclusive panel session at 10:00 am Hong Kong time on Tuesday, 27 October, leaders from Blackstone, Actis, Baker McKenzie and Colliers International will be discussing key issues facing investors in Asian data centres, including the potential for building region-wide platforms, the challenges of achieving growth in a sector with multiple policy issues and the outlook for the region’s data centre market in 2021.

Investing in a Crowded Niche
Sponsored by real estate software and service provider Yardi Systems, the one-hour show will bring together Blackstone managing director Michael Shang, who led the fund manager’s investment in NASDAQ-listed 21Vianet, and Actis partner Thomas Liu, who spearheaded the UK firm’s data centre ventures in China and South Korea.
Joining the two fund managers will be Baker McKenzie partner Edwin Wong, who advised on Gaw Capital’s establishment of a mainland China data centre fund among other transactions in the sector, and Colliers International managing director for China Tammy Tang, who has worked with developers and investors acquiring and developing data centre assets in Greater China.
Data centres have been the among the best-performing asset classes both in Asia and globally this year. But asset owners are also facing greater competition as institutional capital pours into what remains a niche market sector.
During the session, which will be shared via Mingtiandi’s MTD TV platform, panellists will be asked to provide their perspectives on where the market is heading and viewers will given the opportunity to quiz these market leaders on what to expect in the coming months. The session will be moderated by Mingtiandi founder Michael Cole.
